Learning to See = Seeing to Learn: Vision, Learning & Behavior in Children

Description for Learning to See = Seeing to Learn: Vision, Learning & Behavior in Children

From the Author I wanted to give parents and teachers a resource that explains a condition that may keep children from reaching their potential in school. Many parents know the frustration and worry that their child is not progressing well in their studies, especially when reading is required. This can be even though the child is bright and responsive to learn in other ways. Instead of being a place of wonder, school can become a place to avoid. IEPs are created to accommodate the student to encourage success. If there are undiagnosed visual processing problems, the student will continue to struggle. When vision problems are identified by helpful teachers who recognize the child is struggling, the vision test most often used is testing for 20/20 vision. While important, it is not the only test that can be done. You may have 20/20 vision with or without glasses and still not process successfully what you are seeing. Some children need to learn to see so they can see to learn. The frustration that children with visual processing problems can trigger changes in behaviors. That can lead to identifying the child as having ADD or ADHD. You will learn that this should be a decision that is applied only after visual processing issues are ruled out. Students who see properly will ease some of the tensions parents experience when school is not going well for the child. Teachers will be able to help each student thrive and reach their full potential without some of the behaviors that come from a student who is frustrated by not being able to see to learn. I am grateful to include chapters contributed by other eye-care professionals and academics. Parents and teachers will find a chapter by an elementary school teacher on her experience as a teacher and a parent insightful. For those who have a child with an IEP, a vice-principal explains the IEP process and how to engage it with confidence. This book was written to assist and support parents, educators, and health professionals to understand the other aspects of how vision and visual processing actually works. I can appreciate what it feels like to struggle to read because of a visual processing challenge. I was that child too.
