From the Author Greetings, reader! The language educators use with students is so important. I have been thinking about the language of teaching for a long time. As a new teacher, I realized that some of my language habits didn't match my best intentions. Some honest feedback from a student helped me understand that the joking and teasing that I thought built rapport was sometimes confusing (and even hurtful) for some of my students. It took me a few years to realize that the way I praised students by making everything about me ('I love the way you're working so hard.' 'I like how quietly you're walking in the halls!' 'Thanks so much for working together so well.') encouraged kids to work for me instead of themselves.I was also fortunate to have some powerful mentors early in my career who helped me examine (and change) some of my language. Marlynn Clayton, Ruth Charney, and Paula Denton were colleagues of mine when I worked with the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching who were greatly influential. Paula's book, The Power of Our Words, along with Peter Johnston's book, Choice Words, helped me continue my reflective journey. As a consultant working in many schools, I have found myself supporting teachers' thinking about language a lot. Whether the topic is differentiation, social and emotional learning, classroom management, or something else, language is always an important topic to explore. After many years of thinking about it, I finally decided it was time to write a book about it! My goal is to help teachers bring their language more in line with their best intentions. After all, we all have positive goals and want the best for our students, don't we? And don't we also all end up using at least some language patterns that don't totally line up with these good intentions? As an educator and a parent, I still have language goals I'm working on--there's always room for growth. I hope that if you get this book it is both thought-provoking and enjoyable. I hope that it helps you continue to grow as an educator so you can create the kinds of safe, exciting, challenging, and joyful learning environments that all kids deserve!-Mike Anderson Read more About the Author Mike Anderson has been an educator for more than 25 years.
