Review In 'Navigating School Selection 101,' Dr. Frederick provides a framework that helped me to think about how to select an appropriate learning environment for my daughter. This book was a wonderful guide that assisted me in studying and understanding my child while also investigating schools that could potentially provide the best educational experience. As Dr. Frederick indicates in the book, the best schools for other children may not be the best choice for our children for various reasons. Some of these schools may not be culturally responsive or appropriate for the development of the black child. In fact, they can have a detrimental effect on the psyche of our children leading to poor self-esteem and broken spirits. The biggest take-away for me was that Dr. Frederick also encouraged parents to create a sense of mindfulness that allows us to know ourselves and our children on a much deeper level. From this perspective, I think that the book provides a very holistic approach because it helps us to tune into the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of ourselves and our children. Frederick's honesty and passion about the school navigation process is compelling and extremely helpful. A very different perspective on the how to choose a school. I would highly recommend. Frederick is an Independent Educational Consultant, who helps families find great schools for their children, as well as an Associate Professor of Education at The Catholic University of America. Dr. Rona spent the past twenty-five year focusing her teaching and research on issues of equity, curiculum and pedagogy, critical race theory, culturally responsive teaching, and urban education. She has also written over a dozen articles on culturally-responsive practice and exemplary teaching for children and families of African descent. She currently serves as a coordinator and alum of the Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP). She holds a B.A.in Psychology from Hampton University, an M.P.S. in Africana Studies from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on teacher education and equity from the University of Maryland, College Park.
