Make The Dirt Fly: One family's adventure during the building of the Panama Canal

Description of Make The Dirt Fly: One family's adventure during the building of the Panama Canal

In this firsthand account of the days of grueling labor of the men who built the Panama Canal, this author pays tribute to the unconquerable fortitude and intrepid spirit of the women from the United States whose loyalty and unceasing endeavors made it possible for these men to continue the all-important task. Through seasons of sticky heat and torrential rains, they managed to maintain homes and care for their husbands. Born Rosina Mahr, one of a large family living in Wintersberg, a village in the province of Lorraine, October 20, 1878, Mrs. van hardeveld led an interesting life. When she was 8, the family went to the United States, eventually settling in Western Nebraska on a homestead. She grew up to become a Cheyenne County school teacher until she married a newly naturalized Netherlander. In 1905, her husband went to work on the Panama Canal. She and two small daughters followed him before the year was up. They remained until the Panama Canal was completed in 1914, traveling back to the US for only a short time to deliver their 3rd child, a son. As a fan and believer in President Theodore Roosevelt, new American citizen Jan van Hardeveld held President Roosevelt's slogan high, "Make the Dirt Fly."
