Description of Swim the Lake Before You Row the Boat: Awaken a Boy's Success Mindset, Unleash His Confidence and Give Him the Foundation for a Great Life
From the Author Interview with the authors Tess and Deb CanjaIf you had to explain this book in one sentence, what would you say? This is a definitive roadmap for a parent, teacher or coach-guaranteed to deliver the one thing responsible for a boy's lasting success-a 'success mindset.' Here we use the word 'success' not only in terms of business, career, or financial success, but also to include relationships, self-image, purpose, contribution, and a meaningful life.Parents want the best for their sons. Teachers go into teaching hoping to make a lasting difference. Coaches want the satisfaction of leading a team to a championship and helping boys become champions in life. It seems more important than ever to get it right, but it also seems to be getting harder to do. Life doesn't always work out the way we had hoped for our boys. But it can, and we wrote this book to show how to make it happen.Who are the major influencers of your life and philosophy? We know that what we think determines the reality we experience. There have been many who taught, in different ways, that our minds are the most powerful creator of our success. Some who have influenced us include: Napoleon Hill,Genevieve Behrand, Thomas Troward, James Allen, Neville Goddard, Byron Katie, Seth,Jose Silva, and Marianne Williamson. They explained that whatever we believe about ourselves now will determine what will come into our lives later. If we want to create a better future life we have to examine our present beliefs about ourselves. When we apply that understanding to how we raise our boys to men, it changes everything. Also important have been both the Bible and A Course in Miracles. In the Bible we find the parable of the mustard seed with Jesus saying that if you have faith 'as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible unto you.' It means that when you know who you are, perfect and limitless as a child of God, you have the ability to move mountains. In this book, we are sharing how to deliberately, proactively, and effectively teach a boy WHO he is-the truth about himself-that he is respected, interesting, successful, resourceful, that he can tackle new things and master them, that people like him, that his opinions count, and that he has value and worth. When these beliefs are embedded in a boy's mind, he becomes all of that-just as the mustard seed KNOWS what it is and becomes the plant, the boy KNOWS who he is and becomes it. There is a magic to it, an alchemy. We show how to make that work.We have also been influenced by those who are dedicated to helping us become as efficient and effective with the time we have-to be the best we can be in all areas of life. These include Michael Hyatt, Brendon Burchard, Steven R. Covey,Tim Ferriss, Tony Robbins, Charles Duhigg, Dan Ariely, Nick Vujicic, and HalElrod. What books have had a major influence on you?The list is endless, but a few are The Nature of Personal Reality, A Course in Miracles, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Think and Grow Rich, As a Man Thinketh...What are some of the major ideas that you integrate into this book or your life in general? The idea that our thoughts create our reality has been part of our personal philosophy for decades. When we understand that what we think and feel now will bring experiences later that validate what we already think and believe, it can help motivate us to more carefully think about what we want our future to look like and then focus on what we are thinking and feeling today. We didn't set out to write a book about that, however. The book began as a memoir,as a way to remember an important, sweet and meaningful time where time itself seemed to stand still in beautiful summers lived barefoot in the Northern Michigan woods, the water and the sunshine. But it soon turned into two books-a memoir and a book of lessons learned. And, as we began to truly understand why the program was so successful, our desire to write a book of lessons learned became a mission to share what we knew could work for all kids.If you could not use your current book title, what would be another choice? We had so many! They included: The Making of Men, Raising Boys to Men, The Eagle Soars. But we like this one best because swimming the lake before a boy could go out in a boat by himself was a major part of Camp Flying Eagle life and is a great metaphor for our philosophy. A boy has to experience certain things for a success mindset to take root and grow. That's what 'swimming the lake' really means and in this book we show how to do that in our everyday lives.
